The healing begins at the beginning. Many of us have gotten into doing something creative and never think about the healing aspect of it at all. Few of us, like me, got into doing something creative for it's healing powers. In fact the reason I'm writing this is because of the great surprise I got when I suddenly realized how much my creative work impacted my life in a positive way. How it wasn't until I'd engaged my whole brain that things really changed for me.
I had dreamt of being a "real artist" when I retired. Well, amazingly, I'm not retired yet and here I am doing art. I got into it before retirement because I wanted to attend the five week trial of our daughter's murder case. To do that I decided to put my business on holiday mode., like I would if I went on a cruise or something. Well, when the trial was over I asked myself, what if I stayed on holiday mode on a permanent basis, just so I could do art? So that is what I did and so far It has worked out fine. I would never have believed it but I basically am on a permanent holiday! (Except at month end as invoices and payroll never go on vacation!)
The healing begins when I decide to do something creative with a question, idea or issue. In fact that is how "inspiration" can be defined, as a new and better way of answering a question, or solving a problem.
Art is all about "truth". It's about the truth of ourselves, our questions and issues. It's about my own answers to those issues. When I begin to mentally work on a question, even before I've done anything physically the healing begins to happen. The very process is what heals you and me. We begin to go outside of ourselves. We stop navel gazing. The thinking makes us do research. It makes us ask questions like, "What if....such and such?" We begin to dream, to go beyond into uncharted areas and we get new ideas. It is then that, we get really excited and enthused and motivated even more.
”To raise new questions, new possibilities, to regard old problems from a
new angle, requires creative imagination.” Albert Einstein
It is always a healing thing to discover truth about ourselves. And this is what begins to happen even before we get our hands or feet doing anything. The very planning of what we will do and how we will do it plus why we will do it begins the healing of our hearts, minds and souls.
"The way I see it... If you need both of your hands for whatever it is you're doing, then your brain should probably be in on it too." — Ellen DeGeneres,
I know she was talking about cell phones and driving, but this applies here too. You will begin by engaging your brain. Your whole brain, the left and right brain. That's what creativity will do, force you to use both sides of your brain and that in itself is a huge element to why healing happens. Try dealing with your issues with just one side of your brain and it will not work. It won't be complete. I know, I tried it. Creativity forces you to engage the left brain in the planning and technical side of things. Your right brain will engage in the creative aspect of what you are doing. The left will argue with you about that but don't listen, let the right brain flourish and grow. Your healing will be much quicker and thorough.
But you might say, I'm good. I don't need any healing! Don't worry, you are human and as a human you are not all together at any given time. We all need healing for something. Possibly a physical disability, depression, lost love, anger, mental issues, trauma, family dysfunction, social problems, low grades, unemployment, fear, illness, spiritual questions, nothing to do, getting fired, etc. etc. Whatever it is we need to learn the "truth" about ourselves our questions and issues. So lets just get creative and we will all be surprised what it will do for us.
From Cheers Cliff Clavin: "Interesting little article here. It says that the average human
being only uses 17% of his brain. Boy, you realize what that means? We don't use
a full, uh... 64%."
