"Creativity: a constant "new" frontier. Students (of the yet unnamed) St. Aidan's art studio are on a mission to explore strange new worlds of inspiration and creativity, to seek out and discover new ways of visual expression and boldly go where no woman or man has ever gone before!"

My apologies to Mr. Shatner. I can still hear his voice
introducing every Star Trek show with this mission statement of the Starship Enterprise ending with "...where no man has gone before." And then sitting back in anticipation of what new adventures would lie ahead.

As I think about this past Thursday, Dec. 17th, our art class's first ever art show, I thought about that and began re-shaping it for our class and our adventure together. It actually seems rather fitting!

Something quite amazing happened that day, for with only three months of a once a week art class and studio day, this group of grades 5 - 12 art students, went boldly forth, going where they had never gone before
putting together an amazing art show by mid December! Wow!

It was not until the crowd was milling around nibbling cookies and enjoying the art, that this thought stopped my thinking in it's tracks. Three months! Really? It seemed so surreal.

Besides this you must know that each of the two pieces they showed was a personal work of original art. These were not pieces of the same subject done as a studio assignment. Each student's work was unique original and personal. So each of the pieces were very different, making for an interesting show very diverse in it's presentation.  We also included their sketch books displaying class exercises, preliminary
sketches etc.

I have to confess that I've been bragging about this class, explaining the pleasure of teaching a class so receptive and eager to learn.  Someone responded to my excitement with, "They'er going to make a teacher out of you yet, eh?" And he was right! I have learned so much! Humbled by the responsibility and trust of the school. Astonished at the energy and fulfillment this experience has given me. For me this is a "God-thing" and my prayer is that it's the same for everyone involved.

As you can imagine, just like every adventure challenged the metal
of the characters in Star trek, each student had their moments of fear and trepidation. Each digging deep, finding the courage to keep going, trusting the process. Learning to trusting in their own gifts and creativity to produce works for the show.

I am so proud of these gifted and courageous students. I am so looking forward to next year when once again we will all boldly face brand new frontiers of creative adventures together.
“Imagination is more important than knowledge.
For knowledge is limited to all we now know and understand,
while imagination embraces the entire world,
and all there ever will be to know and understand.”
