A Valentine's Day Tin-Foil Rose
This week my Wednesday art class at St. Aidan's North End took on a new life of it's own. Scary, I know.
I decided we would sculpt with tin-foil! Despite my power point introduction to the subject, suggesting that the students create a range of animals and such fell on deaf ears. It did not take long for and a wide scope of subjects for sculpting came into reality. They certainly had
their own ideas.
First, there was the above rose. A female student sitting in the back ignored the frenetic activity around her and silently produced this amazing flower. I had not done any specific instructions on how to make a rose with tin-foil, but there it was. As you can see it is beautiful.

Then there were these two pieces which would be classed at the most conservative end of the scale. A cross with a crown at the top and a heart at the bottom. Wonderful metaphors. A group holding hands is warm, loving and relational. Beautiful and meaningful.
These two come from the world of water, a canoe with oars and a shark.
On the left is a sculpture of two grapes. The pieces on the right would be classed as the opposite end of the scale! As described by the student(s) these include items needed to succeed on the street and in the gangs. First, the double barreled shotgun. Next a pouch of drugs. Then a bundle of index cards to simulate a roll money. This was dubbed "profits." And beyond that several anti bear spray cans for protection, not from bears but competitors.
The fact of the matter was, unlike has often been the case, everyone including the boys got involved in doing art! That of course was a good thing. A little more troubling was some of the subject matter chosen. Tells you were their heads are at doesn't it. Even though it was all fun and games it gives one pause as to what these young students are dealing with. Even who their heroes are.
Let us keep this school in our thoughts and prayers that the students would see the folly of the lifestyle these items portray and make decisions that will embrace Christ who brings "life and peace" into lives.

- the trouble is, humans do have a knack of choosing precisely
those things that are worst for them.”
